The Institute for Public History offers paid summer internships for University of Virginia graduate and undergraduate students at public history sites. Specific sites and duties of the internships change each year. Sites include historic houses, museums, libraries, public policy organizations, and The University of Virginia. Both small, volunteer historical associations and large public and private agencies are represented.

These internships offer students an opportunity to experience the worlds of public history through direct, hands-on summer work. The internships also establish a partnership between the academy and the public places in which knowledge is disseminated. Through these focused internships, students can contribute to their academic training, and in the process, further the aims of public history organizations. In turn, they have an opportunity to learn about the ways in which their academic knowledge is applied for the benefit of the gerneral public. This program represents a major public outreach mission of the Institute.
